Dolphin Tour, "Our Specialty"

Enjoy the thrill of kayaking with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins off the northend shoreline of Virginia Beach, VA. Since 1996, Chesapean Outdoors (formerly known as Chesapean Kayak Tours) has been offering guided kayak dolphin watching trips to see these amazing creatures during their summer migration here off the coast of Virginia. Our use of sit-on-top kayaks provides people with little or no experience an opportunity to see these animals up close and personal in a safe and eco-friendly way. During the tour we also see brown pelicans, ospreys, and other sea birds as well as the occasional sea turtle and cow nose ray. Towards the end of our tour we also spend time learning to surf the small ocean waves (optional). Our dolphin watching tour departs daily at 9a.m. Additional tours can be added throughout the day based on demand. Cost is $55 per person.

First Landing State Park

Kayak the still waters of First Landing State Park (formerly known as Seashore State Park), and witness the beauty of this unique maritime forest surrounded by wetlands. During this tour you will likely see blue herons, egrets, king fishers, ospreys, and other bird species. Dolphins and cow nose rays are also seen on occasion. Midway through the tour we land the kayaks at the base of an old dune formation and take a short hike through the forest to view beautiful white hill lake where giant osprey nests abound. We then head back along the shoreline to view ancient oyster beds as well as new oyster beds that are part of a conservation effort to restore oysters in the Lynnhaven River basin. A brief talk is given on the estuarine ecosystem. Tour times are flexible but we recommend early morning or late afternoon trips to maximize viewing of wildlife. Cost is $55 per person.

Sunset Paddle

Enjoy the beauty of a sunset paddle on the Chesapeake Bay. On this tour you will likely see dolphins and numerous bird species as we paddle along historic Cape Henry in Virginia Beach. Several landmarks such as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and Cape Henry Lighthouses will light up as sunset approaches and we make our way toward the marshes of Lynnhaven Inlet. A very scenic and relaxing paddle. Cost is $55 per person.
